Skeleton Pocket Watch Steampunk Mechanical Movement Hand Wind Silver Tone Half Hunter White Dial with Arabic Numerals PW-66 Review

I bought this watch after reading/examining the illustration of how a mechanical watch works in the book The New Way Things Work by David Macaulay. Although some of the illustrations are simply incorrect, I've now decided that forces you to understand the material that much better, in order to see how the illustration SHOULD be.

Fortunately, the illustration was spot-on for how a mechanical watch works, and when you see it drawn out the way it is in The New Way Things Work, you think to yourself, "It's so obvious! Why didn't I think of that?! How Simple!!"

Well, that was my reaction anyway, haha.

...so that book lead me to want to buy a mechanical pocket watch. I expected to need to pay hundreds of dollars for one - and you certainly CAN spend that much on one, but I could not afford that at the moment of purchase. (...it's still probably not a prudent idea, considering they have very little re-sale value, unless one buys an antique one. Okay, enough digression.)

Well, I was very surprised to find this gem! I didn't expect to be able to find a winding mechanical pocket watch for less than a night out to dinner for two at most restaurants!

After looking over the different pocket watches sold on Amazon, I decided on this one because - although there were/aren't many reviews, I read that Amazon backed the sale for this seller, so I knew I could return it within a month if it were a POS.

It is certainly worth $40. I'm sure if you spend much, much more than $40, you can get a more accurate watch, but adjusting the time is incredibly easy, and mine is only off by about 20 seconds a day.

Also, to the person who said you need to wind the watch more than once a day: I would recommend you to have exchanged that watch, because you should not need to wind it more than once a day.

Actually, I have found that winding it only once a day results in the watch keeping better time. Each watch is going to be different; if your watch runs slightly slow, then you may benefit from winding it a LITTLE bit once or twice additionally each day. If your watch runs slightly fast, like mine does, you should wind it as little as possible. It's due to the mainspring tension, and a $40 watch will not be built with enough precision to keep time nearly the same with each individual item.

I bought this watch so that I could use the coin pocket in my jeans, the way the watch is intended to be worn. I really like the look... although I wear my shirts untucked, the chain is just long enough for it to be seen. It's also just long enough to attach on my belt loop, and easily be read when I need to know the time. I also bought this watch to examine the intricacies of a mechanical watch.

I especially recommend THIS particular watch because the design is so good, and at such a great price. You can easily read the time through the front cover because the see-through parts of the watch are ever so slightly smaller in diameter than the arms of the watch.

In short: you can read the time on this watch without opening the case; it (should) only need(s) be wound once a day; it is very, very easy to adjust the time every couple of days when it gets off too much; the components are MUCH higher quality than one would expect.

I don't know how such a high-quality, high-precision timepiece can be had at this price, but I DO know you'll very much enjoy this watch if you want a mechanical watch that keeps time quite well, and gives you something to play with every now and again. :-)
