This Review is largely a comparison between the Charles-Hubert, Paris sun/moon mechanical pocket watch vs. the Gotham sun/moon mechanical pocket watch. For a review on the watch's performance and accuracy, I'll defer to the other reviews here.Appearance:
Besides the name of the company shown on the face, you'd be very hard pressed to notice a difference between these two watches. They are so alike, I'm all but convinced they came from the same manufacturer in China somewhere with a few differences to look out for. The Gotham watch comes with a flat mineral glass watch face while the Charles-Hubert is a convexed acrylic plastic face. This is minor difference but if you have a problem with plastic parts in your watches you might lean more towards the Gotham. The hands of the Charles-Hubert are a matching Chrome, while the Gotham hands are a contrasting dark blue. In my opinion the dark blue hands read a bit better, The Gotham's cover opens to 80deg while the Charles-Hubert opens to almost a full 90. This angle might seem minuscule but if you plan on displaying the watch on a table, the Gotham's 80deg open cover is much more stable. The Charles-Hubert is prone to tipping with its 90deg open cover and leans when I try to display it open.
Chain:
The Gotham is an inch longer and comes with a spring ring while the Charles Hubert comes with a pant hook. It's really personal preference which you prefer.
Feel:
When shaking the watch, the crown of the Charles-Hubert makes a jiggling sound while the Gotham does not. Also when turning the hands of the watch there's a bit more give on the Charles-Hubert; the Gotham just feels a bit tighter and precise. Whether that translates to a better build is yet to be determined. The glass of the Gotham does mean a slightly heavier and solid feel.
Packaging:
The Charles-Hubert crushes the Gotham packaging and presentation. The Charles-Hubert packaging says high-end watch. The Gotham keeps its chain in a small plastic baggy while, the Charles-Hubert has a separate clear compartment for it in the box. Probably as a cost savings measure the Gotham really skimps as it comes in a simple blue box with a sticker of the company logo on it. Both come in a velvety cinched bag. My Charles Hubert came in a nested branded black box with a black paper slipcase (not the blue display box shown here). They should take down the image and mention of the blue display case if they're not going to include it. As a practical note, the Gotham does include a polishing cloth while the Charles-Hubert does not.
Summary:
The build and appearance of these two watches are so similar, you'd probably be happy if you got either watch as a gift. At the time of this review the Gotham costs less than the Charles-Hubert and is a much better value. Perhaps Charles-Hubert's warranty and packaging has something to do with the cost difference since the Gotham clearly edges out the Charles-Hubert with its glass face and tighter feel. If you're going to give these watches as a gift, I'd vainly go with the Charles-Hubert. The packaging is more impressive and you won't have to explain to whoever you're giving it to that the watch is not related to a certain caped crusader. If I was buying the watch for myself I'd go with the Gotham for its glass face, easier to read hands, and more solid feel.
